Title
Axe head - Bronze Age
Subject
About 1800 BC, the "Beaker People" arrived in our land. They made beautiful pottery including decorated beakers, and they used bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) for their tools and weapons. They also used simple ploughs.
The bronze axe-head in the picture was found in Cawston and in i960 a burial urn of the Bronze Age was found by workmen digging a post-hole on the West side of our school gates. It contained the bones of a young man, and is now kept in the Castle Museum at Norwich. Such urns were often enclosed in a circular mound or "barrow" ; weapons and food were often buried too for use in the future life.
Some wealthy chieftains of this time settled in West Norfolk and some of their ornaments and torques of gold have been found.
