The committee met for the first time on Thursday 4th May and thanked everyone for a well supported evening and for the donations received. The inaugural meeting of the society was held on Thursday 15th June at the Cawston Village Hall. Title A name given to the resource Women's Institute Cawston Description An account of the resource The Women's Institute started on the 23rd February 1921 with 52 members. Members marked their 90th birthday with a special celebration at the same venue as it did 90 years ago at the Cecil Cawston Memorial Institute (Village Hall Cawston). The WI was finally able to celebrate its 100th birthday with a garden party at The Bell in Cawston in the summer of 2022. The celebration had been delayed a year because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Sadly in 2021 the WI ceased to exixt. However in 2022 a new group has risen from the ashes, the appropriately named Phoenix Ladies Circle (PLC) with plans to meet regularly at the village hall. Originally conceived as a minstrel show by an American airman based at Heydon in 1953 it evolved under the direction of Jim Howard into a variety show with Jim as the Norfolk comedian and compere and his wife Sylvia as pianist. The group travelled around more than 44 Norfolk villages giving their full length show of sketches and songs for more than twenty years. As well as the original American members of the cast Cawston was represented by Dewings: Dinah (Aves), Mollie (Mack); Teddy and David; Lees: Lennie, Alan and Roy; Howards: Jim, Sylvia, Mary and Christopher. Title A name given to the resource Scouts Description An account of the resource Miss Avis Marsh started a Scout group at Cawston in 1932. Born in Southampton, Miss Marsh moved to Norfolk when her father became Rector at Cawston, her 55 years with the Scouts began in 1914 when she became Scoutmaster at Aylsham, running the troop for nearly 20 years. She started a Scout group at Cawston In 1932 and formed a troop at Roughton when she moved to West Runton a year later.  In 1943, she re-formed the West Runton Scout Group and became Assistant District Commissioner for North Norfolk, being promoted to District Commissioner for Sheringham in 1952. Although she retired from her post in 1967. she remained a member of the West Runton Executive Committee. Miss Marsh was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1932, the Silver Acorn in 1955 and the Silver Wolf in 1961, the highest Scout award presented. <h4>Scout Meeting Places 1920's by Mr Wilfred E. Tubby - 1/8/99</h4> THe Cawston Scout Group Headquarters was opened by Miss Avis Marsh in June 22nd 1985. THE DISPUTE OVER THE SCOUT'S HUT In the E.D.P. was a report, that the hut used by the scouts for about 70 years, that is wrong, no hut was there at that time. Scouts yes, and a time before that. I joined the 1st Cawston Scout Group in March 1920, as a Wolf Cub, then in the Scouts four years later. Our meeting place was a small room, next to the rectory little kitchen, it had a floor like you would find in a stable, was hardly room to move, then later on, the Rev. T.H. Marsh let us have some buildings at the bottom of the rectory property, backing on to Goose pie Lane. We cleaned all the muck out, and M.D. Howard and Son did all the work on it, and made us a good room. We got up a concert to raise funds to pay for it, we had two nights, had a full house each time, tickets cost 9 pence and 6 pence. Got enough to pay for it. We also did the same show at Holt, Reepham and Salle. A Miss Chamber, from West Runton, did some charcoal drawings on the walls. I was a senior scout and helped Rev. Title A name given to the resource Reading and Billiard Rooms Description An account of the resource Reading through the memory lane pieces Cawston enjoyed reading rooms at various locations through the years, the photos are at the meeting room at the old Prince of Wales Public House in the Prince of Wales Road joining Chapel Street, the public house closed about 1904. Other locations of reading rooms were Oak House in the High Street and the Village Hall. The date of the above photo is about 1912, the picture in the above photo at ceiling level and the right hand side of the light is of Lieutenant Cecil Cawston, son of George Cawston. The Reading Rooms were made possible by the Education Acts which made literacy almost universal. They were killed off by the growth of radio and television which make entertainment a solitary occupation. A few favoured spots still have a Reading Room, at Southwold where the Sailors’ Reading Room continues in use. Reading was not the only occupation which happened there; games such as billiards were popular, In Cawston this was played in the cellar under the reading room and as in the above photo - piano playing. The Reading Room was an excellent institution that brought the community together in a way nothing has done since. I think that I can help with more information on the Reading Room and its owner though as it has a strong family connection. The old Prince of Wales public house and premises became Prince of Wales Works around 1907 when they were bought by William A Bush, who established an Agricultural Engineering business there. The business included associated trades such as blacksmithing, building, carpentry and timber trading etc, and he became a major employer in the village employing 20 -30 men. The Reading Room, in the picture, which was supplied by Jo Mason was set up by William Bush in the early 1900's in part of his premises, he was a keen believer in education and helping his fellow men and was an established Methodist lay preacher and later both a long serving member of and Chairman of the Parish Council and The Heath Trust as well as serving as a District Councillor on the St. Faiths and Aylsham District Council. Title A name given to the resource Toc H Description An account of the resource The wonderful movement of the Cawston branch "Toc H" was formed in 1953 Coronation year of Queen Elizabeth 11, this was a branch of the Toc H organization set up in the first world war in Belgian in a house called Talbot House and was a rest, friendship and kindness house for first world war solders. The Cawston Toc H made contributions and held social events for the community, in 1954 a very kind offer was made to the Cawston Parish Council to help to build a Bus Shelter in Chapel Street which the Council received with great enthusiasm and gratitude by all members, plans were got out and the bus shelter was built as a permanent Memorial in memory of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11, sadly in about the late 1970s or early 1980s, the shelter was removed due to changers in bus journeys and misuse. Toc H meeting were normally held at Cawston School or the <a title="Toc H" href="https://cawstonheritage.co.uk/items/show/35" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Village Hall</a>, The Cawston Toc H branch ceased with great sadness in 1959. Title A name given to the resource Odd Fellows Description An account of the resource The Odd Fellows: The Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Cawston was called The Lytton Bulwer Lodge and was a branch of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows. Special door knocks and handshakes were used as proof of membership. The photo above was the meeting room for the Lytton Bulwer Lodge and was dedicated on the 7th July 1973 which was at the Market Hill and was obtained after the Kings Head public house closed in 1971, the meeting room was also hired to other organisations for meetings and for bingo and parties etc but closed in the early 1990s.
